Hammerkops inhabit areas ranging from Ethiopia and Madagascar through the tropical regions of Africa to Madagascar. The lesser hammerkop (Scopus umbretta umbretta) has a considerably more limited distribution, primarily in Senegal and Nigeria in West Africa. Meanwhile, the subspecies Scopus umbretta bannermanni is located from Arabia to the Cape and extends to Madagascar.
