Male mute swans, known as cobs, and female mute swans, referred to as pens, look very similar to one another. The primary distinction is that males are generally larger and possess a more pronounced knob on their foreheads. Young swans, which are called cygnets, typically have white feathers, although it is not unusual to see cygnets that are gray in color.
